House President discusses postal voting with Greek Interior Minister

The issue of postal voting for Greek citizens residing in Cyprus was discussed on Friday between the President of the House of Representatives Annita Demetriou and Greece’s Interior Minister, Niki Kerameus.

The aim of Kerameus’ visit to Cyprus, is to inform Greek citizens residing in the country about the possibility of exercising their right to vote by mail in the upcoming European elections.
According to an announcement by Cyprus’ Parliament, during the meeting, Demetriou was briefed by the Greek Minister about the implementation of the recently passed legislation, which allows the exercise of the right to vote by mail, inside and outside Greek territory, ensuring among other things the secrecy of the vote and the prevention of double-voting.
Cyprus, it said, is the first stop of Kerameus’ tour to a number of States, in the context of the Hellenic Republic’s campaign to inform Greek citizens, who are residing permanently or temporarily abroad, regarding the legislation in question, which facilitates the exercise of the right to vote.
The President of the Parliament congratulated Kerameus on the recent passing of the said legislation, stressing the importance of providing the possibility to exercise the right to vote by mail, as a means that further promotes democracy and strengthens the active participation of citizens in the electoral processes.
In addition, she referred to the local government reform in Cyprus and the upcoming elections, both for local government and members of the European Parliament.
During the meeting, the announcement concludes, the practices followed by other states for regulating postal voting, and the migration issue, were discussed.
